The vulnerability stems from improper sanitization of Custom Resource (CR) specifications processed by the Ansible operator. A low-privileged user within a Kubernetes environment can submit a crafted CR containing malicious Jinja2 template expressions. When the operator processes these inputs, the injected code is executed within the context of the operator pod. Successful exploitation allows an attacker to gain arbitrary code execution, which can lead to privilege escalation by leveraging the permissions assigned to the operator's service account. Given that many operators run with elevated cluster-wide service accounts, this represents a significant risk for cluster security and data confidentiality.

Impact

Successful exploitation of CVE-2026-92982 allows an unprivileged Kubernetes user to escalate their privileges to match those of the Ansible operator service account. If the operator is configured with cluster-admin or other high-level cluster roles, the attacker could effectively compromise the entire Kubernetes cluster, modify deployments, exfiltrate secrets, or disrupt core services. The scope of impact is limited to Kubernetes environments utilizing Ansible-based operators.

Recommendation

Apply patches for Ansible Operator Plugins as soon as they become available from Red Hat to address the input sanitization flaw.

Audit Kubernetes Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) policies to enforce the principle of least privilege, specifically limiting the permissions of users capable of creating or modifying Custom Resources.

Implement admission controllers in Kubernetes to validate and sanitize Custom Resource specifications before they are persisted or processed by controllers.

A low-privileged Kubernetes user can exploit a Jinja2 template injection vulnerability in Ansible Operator Plugins to achieve arbitrary code execution via crafted Custom Resource specifications.
