The flaw arises during the processing of FAT file system images when the fault tolerance feature is enabled. Specifically, during the log replay process, the driver is susceptible to an out-of-bounds heap write triggered by a crafted image. This vulnerability allows an attacker to control both the position and the value of the memory overwrite. In many embedded environments, this write can be directed to the driver callback table, ultimately granting an attacker control over the instruction pointer and facilitating arbitrary code execution in the driver context. This poses a significant risk to embedded systems that mount untrusted storage media or handle external FAT-formatted data.

Attack Chain

Attacker constructs a malicious FAT image containing specifically crafted data structures to trigger a fault tolerance log replay.

The malicious FAT image is provided to the target system via external storage media or a network file transfer mechanism.

The target system, running the vulnerable FX_MEDIA driver, detects the FAT image and initiates the mounting process.

The driver enables fault tolerance features for the mount, triggering the internal log replay logic.

The log replay logic processes the attacker-supplied data, resulting in an out-of-bounds heap write at an attacker-defined address.

The heap write targets the FX_MEDIA driver callback pointers.

The driver attempts to execute a callback, diverting the instruction pointer to attacker-controlled memory.

Final objective is achieved: Arbitrary code execution within the driver context.

Impact

Successful exploitation leads to full compromise of the affected embedded device. Depending on the device's role, this could allow an attacker to exfiltrate data, pivot into connected networks, or permanently brick the hardware. As this is an embedded driver vulnerability, it affects industrial, consumer, or medical devices utilizing the FX_MEDIA component.

Recommendation

Identify all devices and firmware versions utilizing the FX_MEDIA component within the environment.

Contact the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to confirm the status of the patch for CVE-2026-91041.

Implement strict input validation and access control on storage media interfaces to prevent unauthorized FAT images from being mounted.

If patching is not immediately available, disable fault tolerance features in the FX_MEDIA driver if the operational environment permits.
