OpenAI addressed a vulnerability that permitted attackers to bypass the 'Lockdown Mode' security feature introduced in June 2026. The vulnerability allowed an attacker to escape sandbox restrictions imposed on HTML page previews within ChatGPT. By crafting nested frames, an attacker could trigger an unrestricted popup window that operated outside the sandbox environment. This allowed for silent data exfiltration, the rendering of social engineering lures, and the potential delivery of malicious payloads. The vulnerability was patched by OpenAI on September 18, 2026.

Attack Chain

  1. Attacker delivers a crafted prompt, a malicious GPT, or a shared chat link to the target user.
  2. The ChatGPT interface attempts to render an HTML preview contained within the chat.
  3. The attacker's payload creates a nested frame within the rendered HTML preview.
  4. The nested frame bypasses the interceptor for new window creation.
  5. The attacker successfully executes an unmodified popup function.
  6. The popup window escapes the primary sandbox restrictions, gaining the ability to communicate with external infrastructure.
  7. The attacker exfiltrates chat data or lures the user into clicking a malicious link for payload delivery.

Impact

The vulnerability enabled the circumvention of security boundaries intended to restrict outbound network requests. Confirmed impact included silent chat data theft, rendering of social engineering lures (such as fake update prompts), and potential malware delivery via victim-initiated interactions within the popup.

Recommendation

  • Ensure all instances of the ChatGPT desktop application are updated to the latest version, confirming the fix released on September 18, 2026.
  • Review enterprise policies regarding the use of AI tools that render third-party HTML/JS content, as sandbox escapes demonstrate that AI model controls are insufficient without rigorous environment-level security.
  • Evaluate the use of organizational AI platform features that support shared chat links and automatic HTML preview rendering, as these have been frequent vectors for cross-account and sandbox-bypass exploits.

Immediate actions

Verify all corporate endpoints running the ChatGPT desktop application are patched beyond the September 18, 2026, release.
