Multiple Vulnerabilities in Vim Text Editor Leading to Arbitrary Code Execution

Multiple vulnerabilities in the Vim text editor allow an unauthenticated attacker to achieve arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the user running the application.

The BSI has reported multiple vulnerabilities within the Vim text editor that may allow a remote or local attacker to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user running the application. These vulnerabilities typically arise from flaws in how the editor processes untrusted input, such as malicious modelines or specially crafted file content. Successful exploitation permits the execution of arbitrary commands, which could lead to unauthorized data access, system modification, or further compromise of the host environment. Defenders should monitor for unexpected child processes spawned by text editing sessions and ensure that Vim instances are kept up to date with the latest vendor-provided security patches to mitigate exposure.

Impact

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities results in arbitrary code execution on the host machine. If an attacker leverages this flaw by tricking a user into opening a malicious file, the attacker gains the full execution context and permissions of that user. This impacts any environment where Vim is used to edit files, particularly those that handle content from external or untrusted sources.

Recommendation

  • Upgrade all instances of Vim to the latest vendor-provided version to incorporate security patches for these vulnerabilities.
  • Implement restrictive file-access policies for systems where Vim is frequently used to edit untrusted or externally sourced files.
  • Monitor process lineage to identify abnormal child processes (e.g., shell spawns) triggered by instances of the vim process, which may indicate exploitation attempts.

Immediate actions

Upgrade Vim software to the latest patched version.
