OS Command Injection in thumbnail Python Package

The thumbnail Python package through version 1.5 is vulnerable to OS command injection in the generate_thumbnail() function, enabling arbitrary code execution via shell metacharacter injection into system calls.

CVE search metadata

CVE search record: CVE-2026-110650. Severity: critical. CVSS: 9.8. KEV: no. Product: thumbnail (<= 1.5). Brief: OS Command Injection in thumbnail Python Package. Brief link: https://feed.craftedsignal.io/briefs/2026-10-thumbnail-rce/

The Python package 'thumbnail' (versions 1.5 and earlier) is vulnerable to OS command injection via the generate_thumbnail() function. This vulnerability arises because the package insufficiently sanitizes user-supplied file names or file paths before passing them to operating system calls. Specifically, the function utilizes 'os.system()' to execute external binaries - such as 'ffmpeg', 'convert', or 'unoconv' - to process media files. By crafting a filename containing shell metacharacters (e.g., semicolons, pipes, or ampersands), an attacker can escape the intended command context and execute arbitrary commands.

This issue is significant for any web application or service that utilizes the 'thumbnail' package to process user-uploaded files. If exploited, the attacker executes code with the same privileges as the underlying Python process, which often possesses elevated permissions in server environments. Defenders should prioritize identifying instances of this library in their dependency tree and implementing strict input validation for filenames before they reach media processing functions.

Attack Chain

  1. Attacker identifies a web application or service that uses the 'thumbnail' Python package for file processing.
  2. Attacker crafts a malicious payload in a filename (e.g., 'image.jpg; id > /tmp/out').
  3. Attacker uploads or submits the malicious file to the target application.
  4. The application receives the file and invokes 'generate_thumbnail()' with the attacker-controlled filename.
  5. The 'generate_thumbnail()' function unsafely concatenates the filename into an 'os.system()' command string involving 'ffmpeg', 'convert', or 'unoconv'.
  6. The operating system shell interprets the injected metacharacters and executes the attacker's secondary command.
  7. Attacker achieves remote code execution with the context and privileges of the Python application.

Impact

Successful exploitation allows for arbitrary OS command execution, leading to complete system compromise, unauthorized data access, or the deployment of persistent threats within the environment. Any application accepting user-provided files that are subsequently processed by the affected library is at high risk, potentially impacting a broad range of web services in sectors utilizing media processing.

Recommendation

  • Update the 'thumbnail' package to a version beyond 1.5 if a security patch becomes available.
  • Audit application code for instances of 'thumbnail.generate_thumbnail()' to ensure all inputs are strictly validated against a whitelist of characters before processing.
  • Deploy file upload security controls to enforce strict naming conventions and file type validation to prevent the injection of shell metacharacters.
  • Utilize Software Composition Analysis (SCA) tools to identify and track the presence of 'thumbnail' (<= 1.5) across the production environment.
