Arbitrary Code Execution in Netgate pfSense

A vulnerability in Netgate pfSense allows a remote, authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code with administrator privileges.

Netgate has identified a critical vulnerability in the pfSense firewall platform that permits a remote, authenticated attacker to achieve arbitrary code execution (ACE) with administrative privileges. This vulnerability exists within the management interface or internal subsystems of the firewall. Given that pfSense devices are typically positioned at the network perimeter, successful exploitation grants the attacker full control over the appliance, allowing for traffic interception, lateral movement into internal segments, or the complete disablement of security controls. Organizations using pfSense should verify if their appliance is running an affected version and monitor for unauthorized administrative logins or anomalous command execution originating from the web-based management interface. As of this report, no specific CVE identifier or exploit proof-of-concept has been publicly disclosed, but administrators should prioritize system hardening and restrict management access to trusted IP addresses only.

Impact

The impact of this vulnerability is severe, as it grants full administrative control over the firewall appliance to an authenticated attacker. This could lead to complete network compromise, data exfiltration, and the creation of persistent backdoors within the victim's infrastructure. While the number of affected victims is currently unknown, the target scope includes any enterprise or small-to-medium business utilizing pfSense as a gateway, VPN concentrator, or perimeter security device.

Recommendation

  • Restrict access to the pfSense web management interface to a dedicated management VLAN or specific trusted internal IP addresses using the firewall's built-in access control lists.
  • Review administrative audit logs for suspicious login attempts or unusual configuration changes performed during off-business hours.
  • Apply security patches provided by Netgate immediately once available for the affected versions.
  • Implement multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all administrative accounts accessing the pfSense web interface to mitigate the impact of compromised credentials.

Immediate actions

Restrict management interface access to trusted IP ranges.
