OpenVPN Information Disclosure and Denial of Service Vulnerability

A vulnerability in OpenVPN allows a remote, authenticated attacker to trigger an information disclosure or a denial-of-service condition via crafted inputs.

CVE search metadata

CVE search record: CVE-2024-4877. Severity: high. CVSS: 8.8. EPSS: 0.43%. KEV: no. Product: OpenVPN (2.4.0-2.6.10). Brief: OpenVPN Information Disclosure and Denial of Service Vulnerability. Brief link: https://feed.craftedsignal.io/briefs/2026-10-openvpn-dos/

A security vulnerability has been identified in OpenVPN that impacts its ability to process certain types of traffic securely. The vulnerability is exploitable by a remote attacker who has already successfully authenticated to the service. By sending specially crafted requests, an attacker can manipulate the internal state of the application, leading to the unauthorized disclosure of sensitive information residing in memory or the unexpected termination of the OpenVPN service, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS) condition. This issue represents a significant risk for organizations relying on OpenVPN for secure remote access and site-to-site connectivity, as successful exploitation disrupts availability and risks data confidentiality.

Impact

Successful exploitation of this vulnerability results in the disruption of critical network infrastructure, as the OpenVPN service becomes unresponsive, preventing legitimate users from establishing secure tunnels. Additionally, the potential for unauthorized information disclosure may lead to the leakage of session data or sensitive configuration parameters. The scope includes all environments running affected versions of OpenVPN exposed to authenticated users.

Recommendation

  • Monitor OpenVPN logs for frequent authentication followed immediately by service restarts or crashes, which may indicate attempted exploitation.
  • Update OpenVPN to the latest vendor-supplied version to remediate CVE-2024-4877.
  • Audit access controls for the VPN environment to ensure that only authorized personnel can authenticate, thereby mitigating the risk from remote attackers who would otherwise meet the authentication requirement.

Immediate actions

Upgrade OpenVPN to the latest patched version
