Linux System Network Discovery Reconnaissance

Adversaries perform network reconnaissance on Linux systems by rapidly enumerating network configuration and firewall settings, which this analytic detects via a 30-minute window of process execution telemetry.

This threat brief focuses on detecting common network reconnaissance techniques used by adversaries on Linux platforms to map internal environments. Attackers frequently execute standard network diagnostic and configuration utilities to gather details about local interfaces, active connections, routing tables, and firewall rules. By monitoring for the execution of binaries such as "arp," "ifconfig," "ip," "netstat," "firewall-cmd," "ufw," "iptables," "ss," and "route," defenders can identify suspicious patterns of enumeration.

The analytic identifies this activity by flagging instances where a user or host account executes four or more distinct tools from this list within a 30-minute window. This behavior is indicative of an automated or manual reconnaissance phase, often a precursor to lateral movement or targeted exploitation. Monitoring this activity is critical for detecting early-stage post-compromise behaviors in data destruction campaigns, cloud-native malware deployments, and targeted attacks such as those involving Industroyer2 or VoidLink.

Attack Chain

  1. Initial access is established via exploitation, credential theft, or web shell deployment.
  2. The attacker executes "ip" or "ifconfig" to identify local network interfaces and IP addressing.
  3. The attacker executes "arp" to identify neighboring systems and map the local subnet.
  4. The attacker executes "route" or "netstat" to understand the network routing and active connections.
  5. The attacker executes "iptables," "firewall-cmd," or "ufw" to enumerate existing host-based firewall policies.
  6. The gathered network configuration data is exfiltrated or cached for use in subsequent lateral movement.
  7. The attacker targets identified internal assets based on the gathered reconnaissance.

Impact

Successful network reconnaissance allows adversaries to identify internal infrastructure, security boundaries, and potential pivot points within the network. In the context of campaigns like VoidLink or data destruction attacks, this intelligence enables the attacker to minimize their footprint while maximizing the reach of their secondary payloads. If the adversary successfully maps the environment, it significantly increases the likelihood of effective lateral movement, privilege escalation, and persistent access across the enterprise.

Recommendation

Prioritize the ingestion of process execution telemetry that includes process command lines, GUIDs, and parent-process relationships via EDR or system monitoring tools.

  • Deploy the provided Sigma rule to detect the rapid execution of network reconnaissance tools within a 30-minute window.
  • Tune the filter macros to exclude known administrative or automated configuration management scripts to reduce false positives from system maintenance tasks.
  • Investigate alerts generated by this rule using the associated process execution history to confirm whether the activity is part of an authorized maintenance task or unauthorized reconnaissance.
