Indirect Prompt Injection and Remote Code Execution in LangAlpha

LangAlpha versions through 2026.09.07 are vulnerable to indirect prompt injection that permits remote attackers to execute arbitrary code and exfiltrate credentials via insecure agent functions.

CVE search metadata

CVE search record: CVE-2026-109440. Severity: high. CVSS: 8.1. KEV: no. Product: LangAlpha (<= 2026.09.07). Brief: Indirect Prompt Injection and Remote Code Execution in LangAlpha. Brief link: https://feed.craftedsignal.io/briefs/2026-10-langalpha-prompt-injection/

LangAlpha versions through 2026.09.07 contain a critical indirect prompt injection vulnerability stemming from the lack of robust input validation, allow-listing, or human-in-the-loop approval processes for the agent's Bash and ExecuteCode functions. Attackers can leverage this by planting malicious instructions in external web content, which the agent subsequently retrieves and processes. Because the agent executes these injected instructions in the workspace sandbox, it allows for unauthorized remote code execution. This vulnerability presents a high risk for organizational data, specifically targeting the potential exfiltration of sensitive credentials stored within the local _internal/.vault_secrets.json file. Organizations utilizing LangAlpha as an automated agent are at risk of secondary exploitation where the agent acts as an inadvertent proxy for attacker activity against the internal environment.

Attack Chain

  1. Attacker hosts malicious instructions on a web resource reachable by the LangAlpha agent.
  2. The LangAlpha agent retrieves and processes the external web content as part of an automated task.
  3. The agent interprets the malicious instructions contained within the content as legitimate operational commands.
  4. The underlying Bash or ExecuteCode functions are invoked by the agent due to the lack of restrictive allow-lists.
  5. The attacker-controlled commands execute within the workspace sandbox environment.
  6. The injected payload targets the local filesystem, specifically targeting _internal/.vault_secrets.json.
  7. The sensitive contents of the vault file are read by the unauthorized process.
  8. Exfiltrated secrets are transmitted to an attacker-controlled endpoint or exfiltrated via the agent's own network capabilities.

Impact

Successful exploitation allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code within the LangAlpha workspace. This leads to the compromise of local sensitive data, specifically the theft of credentials from _internal/.vault_secrets.json. This vulnerability can lead to broader lateral movement if the stolen secrets provide access to secondary services or internal infrastructure.

Recommendation

  • Prioritize updating LangAlpha to a version beyond 2026.09.07 immediately to remediate CVE-2026-109440.
  • Audit logs for suspicious file access patterns targeting _internal/.vault_secrets.json originating from the LangAlpha agent process.
  • Implement egress filtering on the host machine running the LangAlpha workspace to prevent unauthorized data exfiltration if the sandbox is compromised.
  • Restrict agent permissions to only the minimum necessary filesystem access, ensuring the agent process cannot access sensitive configuration files by default.

Immediate actions

Patch LangAlpha to a version greater than 2026.09.07.
