Detection of BCD Edit Boot Recovery Disabling

This brief documents the use of bcdedit.exe by ransomware actors to disable Windows boot-level failure recovery, inhibiting system restoration and increasing the impact of data encryption.

Ransomware actors frequently manipulate Windows boot configuration settings to impede recovery efforts after encryption. A common technique involves using the built-in bcdedit.exe utility to disable the Windows recovery environment. By executing bcdedit.exe /set {default} recoveryenabled no, attackers prevent the operating system from booting into the recovery console, which is often used by administrators to troubleshoot or restore systems from backups or snapshots. This behavior is a critical indicator of post-compromise activity, specifically related to the preparation phase of a ransomware deployment. Monitoring for this command-line execution is essential for SOC teams to identify and disrupt ransomware operations before widespread file encryption occurs.

Impact

Successful execution of this command inhibits standard Windows recovery mechanisms, forcing organizations to rely on external backups or full re-imaging processes. This tactic is observed across various ransomware campaigns, including Ryuk and activity associated with Void Manticore, aiming to maximize business disruption and increase the likelihood of ransom payment by complicating the restoration process.

Recommendation

Deploy the provided Sigma rule to your SIEM to monitor for the specific bcdedit command-line pattern. Ensure that Sysmon or EDR telemetry capturing command-line arguments is correctly ingested and mapped to the process_creation log source. Investigate all alerts generated by this rule immediately, as it is a high-confidence indicator of unauthorized system configuration tampering.

Immediate actions
