Multiple Denial of Service Vulnerabilities in System Security Services Daemon

Local attackers can exploit multiple vulnerabilities in the System Security Services Daemon (SSSD) to trigger a denial of service condition, impacting authentication and identity management services on Linux systems.

The System Security Services Daemon (SSSD), a critical component for managing identity and authentication providers on Linux systems, is affected by multiple vulnerabilities that allow a local attacker to cause a denial of service (DoS). These vulnerabilities reside within the daemon's internal request handling and process management logic. By submitting specifically crafted requests or local system conditions, an unprivileged local attacker can induce a crash or hang of the SSSD service. Since SSSD is frequently relied upon by PAM (Pluggable Authentication Modules) and NSS (Name Service Switch) for system logins, SSH access, and local user resolution, this disruption can lead to an inability for users to authenticate to the host, effectively locking out legitimate administrators and service accounts. Defenders should monitor for service failures and restarts of the sssd process on all Linux endpoints.
