Vim Netrw Plugin Arbitrary Code Execution

A vulnerability in the Vim netrw plugin allows for arbitrary Vimscript execution through crafted filenames, enabling attackers to execute system commands with user privileges.

CVE search metadata

CVE search record: CVE-2026-43961. Severity: high. CVSS: 7.8. KEV: no. Product: Vim. Brief: Vim Netrw Plugin Arbitrary Code Execution. Brief link: https://feed.craftedsignal.io/briefs/2026-08-vim-netrw-rce/

A code injection vulnerability (CVE-2026-43961) has been identified in the netrw plugin for the Vim text editor. The flaw originates from improper handling of filenames during file management operations, specifically within the mark/unmark functionality. An attacker can craft a filename containing quote characters and expression fragments that successfully break out of the intended quoted context when processed by the plugin.

When a user opens a directory containing such a malicious filename using the netrw plugin, the plugin may inadvertently evaluate the embedded expression as Vimscript. This facilitates arbitrary code execution with the context and privileges of the user running the Vim session. Successful exploitation leads to full command execution on the host machine, making it a significant risk for environments where users frequently interact with untrusted file systems or code repositories via Vim.

Impact

The vulnerability carries a CVSS 3.1 base score of 7.8 (High). Impact includes potential full system compromise, unauthorized data access, and persistence, limited only by the privileges of the user who initiates the Vim process. As netrw is a core plugin included by default in most distributions, the attack surface is broad across environments utilizing Vim, including server infrastructure and developer workstations.

Recommendation

Prioritized actions for security teams:

  • Update all instances of Vim to the patched version once released by the maintainers or upstream distributions.
  • Implement monitoring for suspicious Vim process executions, particularly those originating from unconventional file paths or involving system-level commands triggered by the editor.
  • Use the provided Sigma rule to detect attempts to exploit this vulnerability through malicious directory/file structures.
