Privilege Escalation Vulnerability in Lenovo Vantage

Lenovo Vantage and Commercial Vantage contain an improper link following vulnerability (CVE-2026-15994) that allows local authenticated users to achieve privilege escalation through file system manipulation.

CVE search metadata

CVE search record: CVE-2026-15994. Severity: high. CVSS: 7.0. KEV: no. Product: Vantage, Commercial Vantage. Brief: Privilege Escalation Vulnerability in Lenovo Vantage. Brief link: https://feed.craftedsignal.io/briefs/2026-08-lenovo-vantage-privesc/

Lenovo has identified a security vulnerability in Lenovo Vantage and Lenovo Commercial Vantage, tracked as CVE-2026-15994. The vulnerability is classified as an improper link following flaw (CWE-59), where the application fails to properly validate symbolic links or junctions before accessing files. A local authenticated attacker who has already gained low-privileged access to the system can leverage this weakness to redirect file operations performed by the elevated Lenovo service. By manipulating these file system links, an attacker can influence the application to perform unauthorized file operations, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution with system-level privileges. This vulnerability affects Lenovo Vantage versions prior to 10.2606.12 and Lenovo Commercial Vantage versions prior to 20.2026.20.0. Defenders should prioritize patching, as local privilege escalation vulnerabilities of this nature are frequently targeted by threat actors to expand control after initial system access.

Impact

Successful exploitation of CVE-2026-15994 allows a low-privileged local user to escalate their permissions to system level. This compromise can result in full system control, unauthorized access to sensitive data, and the ability to disable security controls or maintain persistent access. The impact is categorized as high (CVSS 7.0/7.3) due to the complete loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the local system.

Recommendation

  • Update Lenovo Vantage to version 10.2606.12 or later immediately.
  • Update Lenovo Commercial Vantage to version 20.2026.20.0 or later immediately.
  • Monitor for unauthorized changes to system directories or symbolic link creation by low-privileged user accounts, as these are prerequisites for exploiting improper link following vulnerabilities.
  • Review endpoint security logs for anomalous process execution patterns originating from Lenovo Vantage service accounts.

Immediate actions

Patch Lenovo Vantage and Commercial Vantage to required versions
