Multiple Vulnerabilities in CKAN

CKAN is affected by multiple vulnerabilities that allow remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks, bypass security controls, and disclose sensitive information.

The BSI has reported multiple vulnerabilities within the CKAN platform. These flaws enable remote attackers to perform unauthorized actions including the disclosure of sensitive information, the circumvention of established security controls, and the execution of stored or reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks. Because CKAN is frequently used for open data portals, these vulnerabilities pose a significant risk to the integrity and confidentiality of exposed datasets and user sessions. Organizations running instances of CKAN should review their deployments for potential exposure and consult the official CKAN security documentation for relevant patches or configuration changes to mitigate these vectors.

Impact

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities allows for unauthorized access to sensitive data and the compromise of user sessions via XSS. This could lead to data exfiltration, unauthorized modification of portal content, or the hijacking of administrative sessions. The scope of impact is potentially high for any public-facing data portal managing sensitive metadata or requiring user authentication.

Recommendation

Identify all internet-facing instances of CKAN within your infrastructure. Review the official CKAN security advisories for the most recent version releases to determine if your current deployment is susceptible to these vulnerability classes. Apply all available security patches or updates provided by the CKAN project to remediate these issues.

Mitigations

Patch or update CKAN instances to the latest version released by the vendor.
