Denial of Service Vulnerability in Apache CloudStack

An authenticated, remote attacker can exploit a vulnerability in Apache CloudStack to induce a Denial of Service condition on the infrastructure.

The BSI has reported a vulnerability in Apache CloudStack that permits a remote, authenticated attacker to trigger a Denial of Service (DoS) attack. The vulnerability necessitates that the attacker already possesses valid credentials to access the CloudStack environment. By leveraging specific, yet-undisclosed interaction patterns within the platform's authentication-protected interface, an adversary can disrupt service availability. This is a critical operational risk for organizations managing cloud infrastructure via Apache CloudStack, as it enables authenticated users to maliciously crash services or exhaust system resources, leading to unplanned downtime for the managed cloud environment. Defenders should prioritize auditing user access and monitoring logs for anomalies originating from authenticated sessions.

Impact

The vulnerability directly threatens the availability of cloud infrastructure managed by Apache CloudStack. Successful exploitation results in service disruption, preventing legitimate users and automated processes from managing or accessing cloud resources. This impact is localized to the affected CloudStack implementation and can lead to significant administrative and operational downtime.

Recommendation

Prioritized actions for security teams include:

  • Review current Apache CloudStack authentication logs to identify potentially compromised or malicious user accounts.
  • Monitor administrative audit trails for suspicious sequences of requests that may precede a DoS condition.
  • Consult the official Apache CloudStack security release notes to identify available patches and apply them to all management server nodes.
  • Implement strict access control lists (ACLs) to limit the reach of authenticated administrative interfaces to trusted management networks only.

Immediate actions

Review and restrict access to the Apache CloudStack management interface to known administrative IP ranges.
