A buffer overflow vulnerability, identified as CVE-2026-7512, affects UTT HiPER 1200GW devices up to version 2.5.3-1703. The vulnerability lies within the strcpy function in the /goform/formUser file. A remote attacker can exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted request that causes a buffer overflow, potentially leading to arbitrary code execution. Public exploits are available, increasing the risk of widespread exploitation. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to gain complete control of the affected device.
Attack Chain
- The attacker identifies a vulnerable UTT HiPER 1200GW device running a firmware version up to 2.5.3-1703.
- The attacker crafts a malicious HTTP request targeting the
/goform/formUserendpoint. - The crafted request includes a payload designed to overflow the buffer when processed by the
strcpyfunction. - The vulnerable
strcpyfunction in/goform/formUserattempts to copy the overly long input into a fixed-size buffer. - The buffer overflow overwrites adjacent memory regions, potentially including return addresses or other critical data.
- If the attacker successfully overwrites the return address, they can redirect execution to arbitrary code.
- The attacker injects shellcode into the overflowed buffer or another accessible memory location.
- The device executes the attacker-controlled shellcode, granting the attacker remote control.
Impact
Successful exploitation of this vulnerability could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the UTT HiPER 1200GW device. This could lead to complete system compromise, including data theft, device manipulation, or use of the device as part of a botnet. Given the availability of public exploits, the risk of widespread exploitation is high.
