A critical security vulnerability, CVE-2026-5544, affects UTT HiPER 1250GW devices with firmware versions up to 3.2.7-210907-180535. The vulnerability resides in the /goform/formRemoteControl file, where manipulation of the Profile argument results in a stack-based buffer overflow. This flaw allows unauthenticated remote attackers to potentially execute arbitrary code on the affected device. The vulnerability has a CVSS v3.1 score of 8.8 (HIGH). Publicly available exploits exist, increasing the risk of active exploitation. Successful exploitation could lead to complete system compromise, allowing attackers to gain full control of the device, potentially disrupting network services or using the device as a foothold for further attacks within the network.

Attack Chain

  1. An attacker identifies a vulnerable UTT HiPER 1250GW device running a susceptible firmware version.
  2. The attacker crafts a malicious HTTP request targeting the /goform/formRemoteControl endpoint.
  3. Within the HTTP request, the attacker includes a Profile argument containing a payload exceeding the buffer's expected size.
  4. The device receives the malicious request and attempts to process the Profile argument without proper bounds checking.
  5. The oversized payload overwrites adjacent memory on the stack, including return addresses and other critical data.
  6. When the function attempts to return, it jumps to an address controlled by the attacker (due to the overwritten return address).
  7. The attacker's code is executed, potentially granting them complete control over the device.
  8. The attacker can then use the compromised device for malicious purposes, such as network reconnaissance, data exfiltration, or denial-of-service attacks.

Impact

Successful exploitation of CVE-2026-5544 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable UTT HiPER 1250GW devices. Given that this device may be used in homes or businesses, the number of potential victims is significant. Successful exploitation could result in complete device compromise, leading to disruption of network services, data theft, or the use of the device as a botnet node. Due to the availability of public exploits, the risk of widespread exploitation is high.

Recommendation

  • Apply available patches or firmware updates for UTT HiPER 1250GW devices to address CVE-2026-5544.
  • Deploy the Sigma rule Detect UTT HiPER Buffer Overflow Attempt to identify exploitation attempts in web server logs.
  • Monitor web server logs for requests to /goform/formRemoteControl with unusually long Profile arguments, as indicated in the Sigma rule.
