CrowdStrike is enhancing its Falcon platform to address the emerging security challenges presented by the rapid adoption of AI tools and the rise of "shadow AI." The Falcon platform's enhancements aim to close AI visibility and governance gaps. The new capabilities include AI Detection and Response (AIDR) for desktop AI applications like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, DeepSeek, Microsoft Copilot, O365 Copilot, GitHub Copilot, and Cursor. AIDR is also extending runtime security to agents built in Microsoft Copilot Studio. Additionally, CrowdStrike is introducing deep agent and shadow AI discovery on endpoints using Falcon Exposure Management. This feature automatically discovers AI-related components running across endpoints in real-time, including AI apps and agents, LLM runtimes, MCP servers, and IDE extensions. These innovations are designed to address new attack surfaces created by the increased deployment of AI agents and AI-powered software across diverse environments.

Attack Chain

  1. Initial Deployment: An organization deploys AI agents (e.g., OpenClaw or custom agents), LLMs, and related tools across its endpoints and SaaS environments, including developer machines.
  2. Shadow AI Emergence: Employees and engineering teams adopt AI tools and deploy models without adequate oversight, creating a shadow AI environment.
  3. LOTAIL Exploitation: Adversaries leverage "Living Off The AI Land" (LOTAIL) techniques, exploiting the increasing autonomy, high system permissions, and minimal governance of AI agents on endpoints.
  4. Prompt Injection: Attackers inject malicious prompts into AI agents or Copilot Studio agents to manipulate their behavior and gain unauthorized access.
  5. Data Leakage: Compromised AI agents or Copilot Studio agents exfiltrate sensitive data from the organization's systems or SaaS environments.
  6. Policy Violation: Malicious prompts or compromised agents trigger policy violations, leading to unauthorized actions or data access.
  7. Lateral Movement: Attackers use compromised AI agents to move laterally within the network, gaining access to critical assets and sensitive data.
  8. Exfiltration/Impact: The attacker exfiltrates sensitive data, disrupts business operations, or causes reputational damage.

Impact

The lack of visibility and governance over AI tools and agents introduces significant security risks, including data leaks, prompt injection attacks, and policy violations. Compromised AI agents can be exploited for lateral movement, data exfiltration, and disruption of business operations. The increasing use of shadow AI exacerbates these risks, as employees adopt AI tools without adequate security controls. A successful attack could result in the theft of sensitive data, disruption of critical services, and significant reputational damage.

Recommendation

  • Deploy the "Detect AI Agent Installation" Sigma rule to identify the installation of AI-related components on endpoints (Sigma Rule).
  • Enable Falcon Exposure Management to automatically discover and classify AI-related components running across endpoints (CrowdStrike Falcon Exposure Management).
  • Implement Falcon AIDR policies to monitor AI application interactions and detect prompt attacks, data leaks, and policy violations (CrowdStrike Falcon AIDR).
  • Monitor network traffic for unusual patterns associated with AI applications, especially traffic originating from developer machines (Network Connection Logs).
